Backyard Activities for Your Family this Labor Day
It’s time for families to celebrate all of their hard work and this Labor Day we’re bringing the best of the best to your own backyard. We’ve come up with several ideas to keep the kids entertained and still give mom and dad a nice relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle.
Homemade Giant Bubbles
Oh bubbles, how we love you so. Chasing them, blowing them, making them… wait, what? Kids go through bubbles like infants go through diapers, so we’re making our own. It’s easy, just follow the simple steps below.
Here’s what you’ll need:
6 cups water (distilled is best, but tap water is fine)
1/2 cup blue Dawn dish detergent
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 tbsp baking powder (not baking soda)
1 tbsp Glycerine
Dissolve the cornstarch in the water, stirring really well. Then gently stir in the remaining ingredients, but avoid creating a lot of froth. Allow the mixture to sit for at least an hour, stirring occasionally to keep the cornstarch from settling at the bottom. Get ready for the biggest bubbles you’ve ever seen!
Are the kids getting a little too old for bubbles? How about something to bring out their competitive spirit? Introducing frisbee tic-tac-toe. Here’s how the game works: break out the picnic blanket and use tape to mask off your grid, we recommend a colorful duct tape or masking tape so you can clearly see the lines. Then get your frisbees ready and have at it!
Host a Barbecue
Hosting your own Labor Day barbecue is the perfect excuse to not have to leave home. Everyone loves to gather round the grill, so pull out all of the stops and check out some of these awesome Labor Day recipes, including cheese bread on the grill!
Tag You’re It!
When the sun finally starts to set and the kids think playtime is officially ruined, flashlight tag to the rescue! One kid is “it” while they close their eyes and count to a predetermined number the rest of the kids run and hide. The first kid to have the flashlight land on them is next to be “it”.
Camping in Your Own Backyard
If you’re really itching to get away from it all, but don’t feel like packing up the car then try backyard camping. The kids are really going to love this one, so pull out the tent, get the barbecue going and don’t you dare forget those s’mores!
